‘Taking my top off on social media helped me’: British singer-songwriter Sam Smith speaks out about their ‘weight issues’ and gender identity

Sam Smith has always been vocal about their body image journey. 

And the 27-year-old revealed sharing topless photos on social media helped them accept themselves. 

Speaking to The Project on Friday, the British singer-songwriter opened up about their ongoing ‘weight issues’.

‘My main issue when I was a kid wasn’t my sexuality, it was more my body,’ Sam said.

They added:  ‘My body issues are so linked with my gender issues. It’s all linked with each other. I still struggle having my top off.

‘I still struggle with weight issues, I always will. I feel like with social media, taking my top off on social media, it helped me.’

Sam went on to acknowledge consistently posting about body positivity could become a ‘slippery slope’.  

‘You can get obsessed with constantly posting about your body to make people feel good,’ they explained. 

The Dancing With A Stranger singer, who came out as non-binary last year, also spoke out about their battle with depression.

‘When I came out with my first album, which was very true to me at the time, I felt like I couldn’t express myself any more than how I was,’ Sam said.

‘I thought I was going to be in a suit singing those songs forever. Which wouldn’t be a bad job.

‘I just feel like I’m being myself in front of people at the moment. It’s very scary but also incredibly liberating,’ they admitted.

The Grammy award-winner is currently in Australia promoting their upcoming album while headlining Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras on Saturday, February 29. 

Sam touched down in Sydney on Monday, and spoke of their enthusiasm for their upcoming performance on Instagram soon after

‘Sydney. I’m home, and I can’t wait for this weekend. I’m a Mardi Gras virgin and I’m ready for my cherry to be popped,’ Sam wrote in the caption.
