Coronation Street’s Sue Cleaver reveals she was KNOCKED OUT by co-star in on-screen fight blunder

Coronation Street‘s Sue Cleaver reveals she was once knocked out after being punched by a colleague during an onscreen fight.

The actress, 56, who plays Eileen Grimshaw on the ITV soap, was accidentally whacked in the face by former co-star Judy Holt, who misjudged the punch.

The soap star told how she was forced to go to hospital to get checked out after being knocked-out cold during the on-set scuffle.

The furore happened in 2012 during a storyline involving Eileen and Judy’s character Lesley Kershaw.

Lesley, who suffered from Alzheimer’s, was the wife of Eileen’s then-boyfriend, fireman Paul Kershaw (Tony Hirst).

While being looked after by Eileen, Lesley became upset and confused, and as Eileen tried to calm her down, she lashed out, leaving the cab office worker with a bloody nose.

Describing the unfortunate scene to The Mirror, Sue explained: ‘Judy’s character had Alzheimer’s. She punched me, misjudged it and I got knocked out cold on the floor.

‘I had to visit the hospital to get checked out – she was mortified. When it went out on screen they used the real sound from the punch on the show.’

This year Sue is celebrating 20 years on the cobbles after joining in 2000, with the actress initially only intending to stay for twelve months.

She explained: ‘I originally said I’d stay about a year, but the place is so seductive. Everybody knows an Eileen. She’s every woman, she’s down to earth, level-headed and loyal. She’s a great friend, but cr*p at everything else.’

Meanwhile, Sue is on a break from the soap after filming halted amid the coronavirus pandemic.

It was recently revealed that Coronation Street and Emmerdale will have just weeks left on air as they begin to run out of filmed episodes, ITV bosses revealed.

On Thursday the channel’s boss Kevin Lygo confirmed that Emmerdale will remain on screens until the end of May, while Corrie will stay on air until the end of June.

Last month both soaps cut down their weekly broadcast of episodes as they were forced to halt production due to pandemic.

Speaking during an online Q and A at the Edinburgh TV Festival, Kevin revealed that are currently plans for Emmerdale to stay on air until the end of May.

The soap recently cut its weekly broadcasts from seven episodes to just three to try and ration episode the cast had already filmed.

Meanwhile Coronation Street is set to finish its bank of filmed episodes at the end of June, meaning both soaps could go off-air by the summer.

Kevin confirmed that there are plans being put in place so they could resume filming of some capacity once lockdown restrictions are eased.

He added that it’s likely older cast members won’t return to set for sometime, saying; ‘I don’t want Ken Barlow to get sick.’

Kevin also confirmed that producers will rewrite storylines so they can limit the amount of cast members involved, and will use camera tricks to film while adhering to social distancing.
