‘Not everything should be an ice cream flavour!’ MasterChef fans are left with a bad taste after Reynold Poernomo makes shiitake mushroom ice cream during a challenge

MasterChef fans were left largely unimpressed by Reynold Poernomo’s decision to make shiitake mushroom ice cream during Wednesday’s episode.

After being handed a mystery box containing homegrown produce, the 26-year-old chef decided to create a ‘savoury dessert’.

‘So, got a shiitake mushroom ice-cream going. Gonna do a parsnip parfait…’ he explained to producers.

He added: ‘I really hope the judges are all on board with this idea, and I just hope I can execute it well.’

Unfortunately for Reynold, the judges weren’t delighted by his dessert, and neither were the public watching from home, who vented their opinions on Twitter.

‘Can we just agree that not everything should be an ice cream flavour?’ wrote one viewer.

‘Just imagining standing at the ice-cream counter trying to decide between parsnip and shiitake flavours,’ joked another fan sarcastically.

Others were just confused by Reynold’s decision to add shiitake mushrooms to his dessert in the challenge.

‘When are you supposed to eat mushroom ice-cream? Like before or after mains?’ tweeted one curious viewer.

Judge Jock Zonfrillo added: ‘This texture, plating, all beautiful. I was expecting it to be more savoury.’

Reynold acknowledged that while his ‘dish didn’t work out’, he was ‘fine’ with it, and he had ‘a lot of other ideas’ for future challenges.
