While the nation’s moviegoers are still unsure when movie theaters will open across the country, at least one upcoming movie is planning a theatrical release in July.

The Outpost, a new military thriller based on Jake Tapper’s non-fiction book The Outpost: An Untold Story of American Valor, has been given a July release through Fathom Events.

The film will kick off with a special event on July 2 on approximately 500 movie screens, with each screening coming with, ‘a special introduction from select cast members and exclusive behind-the-scenes footage.’

After the July 2 event, The Outpost will begin a week-long theatrical run, though it’s unclear when it will be available on digital formats after that.

Fans can visit the Fathom Events website for details on ticket sales and participating theaters when they become available.

The Outpost follows a tiny unit of U.S. soldiers, alone at the remote Combat Outpost Keating, located deep in the valley of three mountains in Afghanistan, as they battle to defend against an overwhelming force of Taliban fighters in a coordinated attack. 

The film follows what was known as The Battle of Kamdesh, which was considerd the bloodiest American engagement of the Afghan War in 2009.

Bravo Troop 3-61 CAV became one of the most decorated units of the 19-year conflict.

Scott Eastwood and Orlando Bloom lead a cast that also includes Caleb Landry Jones, Jack Kesy, Taylor John Smith, Jacob Scipio and Milo Gibson.  

Three troops who fought at COP Keating appear in the film including Medal of Honor recipient Ty Carter, who is played by Caleb Landry Jones in the film. 

Rod Lurie (The Contender) directs The Outpost with the adapted screenplay written by Oscar-nominated screenwriting duo Paul Tamasy and Eric Johnson (The Fighter).
