Will Young thanks Spencer Matthews for responding to him with ‘maturity and respect’ after he criticised star for ‘reaffirming gay stereotypes’ on BBC show This Is My House

Will Young has thanked Spencer Matthews for responding with ‘maturity and respect’ after his complaints about BBC show This Is My House.

The singer, 42, was left offended on Monday after the former Made in Chelsea star, 32, asked who ‘the least gay’ person was on the BBC reality show, and it seems Spencer responded to him privately.

Giving fans an update on his Instagram on Tuesday, Will said: ‘@SpencerMatthews has had the maturity and respect to respond in a very understanding way and I completely appreciate it. Thank you sir.’

However, Will appeared to still be frustrated with the BBC as he added that they had not responded to his complaints, nor had the creators of the show.

He added that he hoped ‘perhaps some sort of understanding and sense of being educated from a privileged reality show person (which I am aware I am as well)’ could take place.

Earlier in the week, Will criticised Spencer for appearing to ‘reaffirm gay stereotypes’ while appearing on the BBC reality show.

The former Made In Chelsea star prompted outrage from Will after asking who ‘the least gay person is’ during a guest appearance on the Stacey Dooley hosted This Is My House.

Spencer made the offhand remark while featuring on the high concept show, in which celebrities must take guesses at the true owners of various lavish properties, alongside wife Vogue Williams.

Taking to Instagram on Monday, a furious Will – who publicly came out as gay after winning talent show Pop Idol in 2002 – admitted he felt deeply offended by his comments on the BBC show.

Writing exclusively in upper-case, he ranted: ‘ASKING ‘WHO IS THE LEAST GAY’ ON @BBCIPLAYER @BBC #THISISMYHOUSEBBC1 I FIND COMPLETELY OFFENSIVE .

‘WHAT DOES ‘LEAST GAY’ MEAN? MOST ‘MASCULINE’ , LEAST ‘EFFEMINATE’ ‘FOR F**** SAKE @BBC DON’T YOU REALISE IT IS COMPLETELY REAFFIRMING OFFENSIVE AND SHAMING STEREOTYPES , I’M GAY,TAKE IT UP THE B** AND LIKE FOOTBALL AND CARS. MIGHT BLOW YOUR MIND …. @SPENCERMATTHEWS (sic)’

Will previously revealed he was “aghast” when radio host Chris Moyles made homophobic comments against the singer on his milestone 30th birthday in 2009.

He said: ‘It still makes me feel sad in a way, because it did affect how important I felt my sexuality was, and because I didn’t stand up for myself.

‘So even though I was like, “Oh, it doesn’t matter”, it did, actually. It was really bad. Really bad.’

Will admitted to being particularly shocked by the incident because he and Chris were on “friendly terms” at the time.

He added: ‘BBC Radio 1 breakfast show DJ Chris Moyles decided to embark on a rampage of homophobia against me – on my birthday no less.

‘It was something that left me aghast, especially as he and I were on friendly terms.’

The controversy happened when Chris amended the lyrics to his hit song ‘Evergreen’.

He said: “It’s my birthday, gonna wear my new dress tonight. And I smell nice. I’ve had a shower and I’ve shaved my legs. Going out later, might go to Nob-oooh for dinner.”
