Cold Feet announces it’s taking a break from screens after the ninth series finale to allow characters to ‘move on’… but show will return to follow their lives as grandparents

ITV have announced that Cold Feet will take a break from screens following the airing of its ninth series finale on Monday.

The creators of the acclaimed show have confirmed the current series will be the last for awhile, as they give the characters ‘a chance to move on’.

Starring James Nesbitt (Adam), Hermione Norris (Karen), Fay Ripley (Jenny), John Thomson (Pete) and Robert Bathurst (David), Cold Feet first aired in 1997 for five series, before returning to ITV in 2016 for four more critically acclaimed series.

It’s over… for now: ITV have announced that Cold Feet will take a break from screens following the airing of its ninth series finale on Monday

The conclusion of the ninth series will see Adam and Karen’s relationship thrown into jeopardy by an offer that’s hard to refuse.

Meanwhile, some unexpected romantic vibes leave David with a spring in his stride. And, whilst drafting up their bucket list, the Giffords receive some news that puts a whole new perspective on life.

The  episode will be the last episode in the current run, with creator Mike Bullen explaining on Monday that the cast and production team feel the time is right to rest the drama before embarking on a tenth series, allowing time to pass before exploring the characters and their stories at a later stage.

Mike said: ‘We feel we’ve explored to our satisfaction the issues confronting the characters at this stage of their lives and we want to give them all a little time to move on, to put clear water between the stories we’ve told thus far and the issues they’ll be exploring when they are empty nesters staring down the barrel of grandparenthood.’

‘We’re looking forward to returning at a later date to document the agony and the ecstasy of the third age…’

James, Hermione, Robert, Fay and John added in the statement: ‘The Cold Feet team have proved that life never stops being funny, challenging and bitter sweet. So, although the show will take a well earned break, we all look forward, when the time is right, to returning to warm the nation’s hearts once again’

Kenton Allen, Executive Producer said: ‘We’re so proud to have brought Cold Feet back for four amazing series and are now taking a well earned holiday and saying au-revoir and definitely not farewell to a much loved series that has defined generations of ITV viewers.’

Speaking to Event Magazine ahead of the ninth series premiere in January, Bullen explained that the show won’t be away for long, teasing: ‘We’re talking about doing a one-off special to tide us over. We need to give the characters space to move on to new stages, so we’ve got stuff to write about.’

The focus of the ninth series has been on the unlikely love developing between Adam and Karen, as well as Jenny’s breast cancer diagnosis.

Cold Feet was a ratings hit when it first aired in the late nineties, but as the ratings showed the first sign of a dip a huge twist aired. Adam’s wife Rachel (played by Helen Baxendale) was killed in a car crash in an episode watched by 10 million viewers.

‘Adam was the centre of everything. To kill his love was devastating for everyone but it gave us more to play with, emotionally. That is precisely the reason we came back: because we went out on a high,’ Bullen explained of the impact of the twist.

The show went off air for 13 series before returning in 2016. But Fay Ripley admitted to Event Magazine that she had doubts if the reunion would work, explaining: ‘I was really scared. A reunion of that sort hadn’t been done successfully in any other show. I didn’t want it to be rubbish and for people to come up to me in the street and say: “What did you do that for?”’

The comeback proved to be a huge hit with over nine million tuning in for the show’s reboot premiere.
