There are always a few hiccups when it comes to live TV.

And on the Today show on Friday, Karl Stefanovic was forced to apologise and sanitise his hands after he let out a giant sneeze on air.

The 45-year-old was preparing to interview a guest on the show with co-host Allison Langdon, when he sneezed.

Karl sneezed into his hand and covered his face with his notes, trying his best to prevent the spread of any germs to his co-stars.

With hygiene concerns at an all time high amid the coronavirus pandemic, Karl got a crew member to chuck him some hand sanitiser so he could clean his hands.

‘Sorry, I’m sorry, it came from a clear blue sky,’ Karl joked about the studio’s backdrop as he covered his face and stifled a laugh.

Ally – who was sitting right next to Karl as he sneezed – remarked how ‘dramatic’ the sneeze was.

‘Good grief, it was so dramatic!’ Ally said.

‘I’m sorry, it just happened, I didn’t know, I didn’t mean it… You try and get a sneeze on national TV,’ Karl replied.

He added: ‘Oh my God, sorry folks!’

Karl and Ally then interviewed artist Nathan Wyburn via a video cross, before Karl went on to apologise once again after the chat.

‘I just want to apologise for that, at the start of the interview, that has never happened in 25 years on air,’ Karl said.

‘It just came on top of me and it became overwhelming, and I should have done all this,’ he said, referring to sneezing in his elbow.

Karl returned to his duties on the Today earlier this month, after taking 10 days off following newborn daughter Harper’s birth on May 1.

‘Everything hurts. I’m tired. Emotional,’ he confessed on his first day back at work.

He joked that it was much easier being back on TV than at home, laughing: ‘I’d go home, but it’s too much work!’

He also said wife Jasmine Yarbrough, 35, was taking to newfound motherhood ‘in her stride’, with their daughter feeding well and sleeping three hours on, three hours off.

Karl is already a father to three older children, Jackson, 20, Ava, 15, and River, 13, whom he shares with ex-wife Cassandra Thorburn.
