Kelly Clarkson and Chelsea Handler reveal how going to therapy has helped them with past traumas

Kelly Clarkson filed for divorce from music manager Brandon, 43, earlier this month after seven years of marriage.

And now the singer has spoken about going to therapy and realizing how much her past experiences still come into play today.

The 38-year-old shared her experiences while speaking to Chelsea Handler on her talkshow on Tuesday.

‘I actually 100% know and go to therapy,’ Kelly said while they were speaking about their childhood traumas.

‘You think you’re past it, and although you know the situation and think you figured it out, you just don’t realize how much PTSD comes into play when something triggers you like that.’

Chelsea said her therapist, Dr. Dan Siegel, helped her slowly uncover her childhood traumas, including the death of her brother, and worked with her to get past it.

She first went to therapy in 2016 when she couldn’t figure out why she had so much anger after President Donald Trump made it into office.

‘He just took me back to my childhood and built on my relationship with my brother and reminded me why there was so much pain inside of me that presented itself as anger,’ she said.

‘Underneath the anger there’s always something hurtful.’

Kelly’s openness about therapy comes after she was left with much emotional damage following her parents’ divorce when she was just six-years-old.

A source told People last week that Kelly is determined not to cause the same hurt to her own children during her divorce from husband Brandon Blackstock.

‘Her priority is making sure her children grow up in a stable, loving environment,’ said the source.

Kelly shares daughter River Rose, 6, and son Remington Alexander, 4, with Brandon, and is stepmother to his kids Savannah, 18, and Seth, 13.

Kelly and her ex’s marriage problems only got bigger while in quarantine.

‘It was a stressful time. Quarantining exacerbated any issues,’ a source told People.

Another insider revealed that work had put a lot of strain on their relationship and the pair – who have children River Rose, six, and Remington Alexander, four, together – had ‘been like friends for a while’.

The source explained: ‘Things had changed in their marriage and the split was a while coming. They both work so hard. It’s nearly impossible to enjoy each other, especially with the children needing constant attention.

‘Kelly’s been through a lot, and she thought Brandon was her happily ever after. It’s very sad.’

Kelly and Brandon had been quarantining together in Montana with their kids and his children, Savannah, 17, and 13-year-old Seth, from a previous relationship, and Kelly previously admitted it was an ’emotional rollercoaster’.

She said earlier in the month she has been on an ’emotional rollercoaster’.

The I Dare You singer admitted life has been ‘really hard’ while isolating at home due to the coronavirus pandemic because she’s been having to juggle all her work commitments – she still does her talk show and is working on a new album – with attending ‘non-stop’ to the needs of her children.

‘Honestly, I have been on an emotional roller coaster,’ she said in an interview seemingly conducted before she split from husband Brandon Blackstock earlier this month.

‘This has been really hard as a working parent, because I’m still doing all the same jobs.’

The singer added, ‘It’s been exhausting honestly, cooking every meal and cleaning nonstop after toddlers and teenagers!

‘Everybody’s learning from home now and the teaching! So, everything has been crazy.’
