Cooper Hoffman, the 17-year-old son of late actor Philip Seymour Hoffman, will follow in his father’s footsteps, with one of his frequent collaborators.
Hoffman has been cast as the lead role in writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson’s untitled coming of age story set in the 1970s, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The project will mark the feature film debut of Cooper, the son of Hoffman and costume designer Mimi O’Donnell.

The film will center around a successful child actor who is navigating his way through high school in the San Fernando Valley.
Hoffman will play the child star at the center of the film, along with singer-songwriter Alana Haim, who is also making her feature film debut.
The ensemble cast also features Bradley Cooper, who has been spotted in 1970s period attire as filming commenced in Encino, California last month.

The cast also includes filmmaker Benny Safdie, who has directed films such as Uncut Gems and Good Time with his brother Josh, who is playing longtime Los Angeles City Council member Joel Wachs.
Anderson is directing the untitled film from a script that he wrote, while also producing through his Ghoulardi Film Company with Sarah Murphy.
Anderson had collaborated with Cooper’s father Philip Seymour Hoffman on his first four films, Hard Eight (1994), Boogie Nights (1997), Magnolia (2000) and Punch-Drunk Love (2003).

Hoffman also starred in PTA’s 2012 film The Master, his last collaboration with the filmmaker.
Hoffman passed away in February 2014 at just 46 years of age, with the cause of death listed as ‘acute mixed drug intoxication,’ with drugs such as heroin, cocaine, benzodiazepines and amphetamines.
Cooper is the oldest of Hoffman’s three children with Mimi O’Donnell, including 13-year-old daughter Tallulah and 11-year-old daughter Willa.

While Alana Haim is making her feature film debut, she did work with Anderson on music videos Summer Girl and Little of Your Love.

While production is under way in the San Fernando Valley, it is not clear how long filming is slated for.
